A Child Called "IT" by David Pelzer

Dave Pelzers book, A Child Called "IT", is non-fiction. When you hear nonfiction, you think of a boring book and why would you care about what happened in someone else’s life? Not with this book.

A Child Called "IT" is about the author, Dave, and how he survived continuous years of child abuse from his mother. His mother had a drinking problem and when she drank she became angry and tried to solve her problems with violence. David would show up at school with cuts and bruises and the other kids would just make fun of him. The school officials tried to help but the mother would always lie her way through it. Dave’s brothers would tell lies just to get David into trouble. His father is in denial about what is happening in his family and completely ignores everything.

This biography comes from an earlier time period but still today child abuse and alcohol addictions are an ongoing problem. David could have been helped by so many people but they just overlooked him like nothing was wrong. By reading this book, it really opened my eyes to seeing how child abuse is a horrible, continuous problem even to this day. People need to stop overlooking it because it can be stopped if the right people get involved.

Bruiser by Neil Shusterman

Bruiser, by Neil Shusterman, is somewhat unique. Reading a book about a young man who takes flesh wounds sounds familiar. But it is a good book if you are looking for something to read in your spare time.

It is the story of a girl who takes in stray guys for some unknown reason. This quickly takes a turn for better/worse. Tennyson, the brother of Bronte, is wary of his sister dating a man who was likely to receive the death penalty. Brewster,  with his superpower, takes pain from others about whom he cares. (He would be a horrible Avenger). Cody is the small boy who constantly gets hurt. These two are the main characters.

The book is structured very well. The story is interesting all the way to the end. It is easy to understand all the unique personalities of the characters.  Brewster is the most alien-like. His uncle is always holding him back from society because of his ability. Brewster never experiences true friends or has much social interaction until he finally meets Bronte and opens up. But as he opens up, his new found friends get hurt and so does he.

I can see why the book qualifies as a Lincoln award book. It's very good and could be a good book for you.

A Child Called "It" by David Pelzer

David Pelzer’s book, A Child Called It, is a true story that reveals the frightening truth about child abuse. If you enjoy reading books about real life situations and the struggles people face then you will enjoy reading this book. David Pelzer is both the author and the narrator of the story.

The book is written in a way that really captures your attention because it is written by a man who has gone through the hardships being shared in this book. The book is based on a young boy's fight to stay happy and well despite the fact he has a very abusive mother. He is forced to go through multiple punishments each day, some so harsh they nearly kill him. Many of the punishments David endured are things I would never even imagine.

The book shows how alcohol can effect and change people in multiple ways. David’s mother was a victim of alcohol abuse and turned to beating David as a way to let out her frustration with her own life.

This book really opened my eyes to the reality of child abuse. For me, it’s hard to imagine lives different from my own but by reading this book it is apparent not everyone lives a life similar to mine. If you are interested in seeing how people overcome struggles and thrive, even in a time of hardship, then this is a book for you.

Bruiser by Neal Shusterman

Neal Shusterman’s book, Bruiser, is a fictional book. If you enjoy being filled with suspense this is definitely the book for you. This book focuses on a brother and sister named Tennyson and Bronte and  their family drama. This book also delves into their relationship with the odd kid out named Brewster. Brewster, nicknamed Bruiser, starts out not having many friends. Once Tennyson and Bronte befriend him, they find out why. It is not only that people do not understand Brewster but it is mostly his own choice not to have friends. He is protecting himself from the unimaginable only he and his family know.

This book really opens your eyes and makes you realize everyone has troubles with which they have to deal. It is an extreme journey all of the characters experience throughout this book. If you want to find out Brewster’s secret, I definitely recommend reading Bruiser.

A Child Called It by David Pelzer

A Child Called It by David Pelzer is a book about Dave’s horrible past. Dave talks about how his mother changed drastically over time from a sweet loving mother to an evil witch who tortured him past his breaking point. Despite his brutal beatings, Dave managed to survive well after he lost all hope that one day he would be free to live a normal life. Thanks to his school administrators, especially the nurse, Dave is set free from his mother because of some child abuse charges.

I would recommend this book because of the unheard of torture methods on a child. I believe this book would also help people become more aware of child abuse and help fight child abuse. I was shocked just by the way his mother would do such hideous things to him that would probably have been done only to a prisoner of war. But, yet again, Dave was fighting a war for his freedom. Dave was a very brave boy who lost hope at the end of the battle but surprisingly, when he did not expect it, his day of freedom came.

Doppelganger by David Stahler

David Stahler’s book, Doppelganger, is a fictional book based on a shape shifter who changes into a 16 year old named Chris who is the football star at the local high school. He tries to be Chris and live his life but he only has so long to do this. I think it was a pretty cool book because when the doppelganger takes over Chris’ body, he has to act exactly like Chris would act without even knowing him. It’s kind of crazy to think somebody can just change into anybody they want because how are you really supposed to know to whom you’re talking. I suggest reading this book because it keeps you on the edge and wondering what’s going to happen next.

Impulse by Ellen Hopkins

Ellen Hopkins' book, Impulse, is a fiction book about three teenagers whose lives intersect at a psych hospital. Whether on purpose or by accident, each of them has done something to try and end their life. Conner tried to put a bullet through his chest even though he had the life most kids dream of having. He had money, he got what he wanted when he wanted it and he was popular. But his mother was cold and heartless and never around. Vanessa lived with her nurse grandmother after her mom was put into a psych hospital. When she started to hear the demons her mom always heard, she got into the habit of cutting. Well, she accidently cut too deeply once and it landed her in the psych hospital. Tony grew up in too many places, all of which were bad. He’s gay, trying to get by and he was abused by many of his mother’s boyfriends, so he ran away. When he had nothing left for which to live, he tried to overdose. They all have a challenge to get through and that is to survive. If you have a difficult life just remember there is always someone who cares. This book though is a great read for anyone.

Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess

Such A Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess is a touching but emotional book. The story starts off with a girl whose name happens to be Meredith. She is a 15 year old girl who was abused by her father since she was a child. When her father, Charles, was sentenced to eight years in prison, the judge promised Meredith eight years of safety but only gave her three. After her father was released from prison, her mother told him to live with her and Meredith. Right away she knew her mother had made an awful decision.

Almost immediately after her father’s return, Meredith befriends a neighbor, Andy, who gives her a feeling of safety from her home life. As a child, Meredith’s father always called her Chirp. After years of not being called Chirp, her father begins to use that nickname again. Right away, you could tell it really bothered her. At the end of the book, there is a complete one-eighty. This book tells the story of a girl’s survival from her own father and the journey to find who she really is.

I highly recommend this book to the people who don’t mind thinking about the worst possible situations. After reading this book, it really changed me for the better because it showed me how bad life can be for some people.

J. Adams Oaks' book, Why I Fight, is a realistic fiction book. If you are a person who enjoys watching battles such as UFC fights, boxing fights or WWE you will enjoy reading Why I Fight because this book tells you the story of a gentlemen who decides to bare-fist fight to get money. The Lost Child by Dave Pelzer

Dave Pelzer’s book, The Lost Boy, is a great book that will make you want to read it in one day. It’s that good. This is a series. The first book Dave came out with was The Child Called It. I've read it a long time ago and there are no words that can describe it because it just has everything in it. It’s just a book with so many details and such sad moments it will make you feel badly for him. Dave went through so many horrible things in his life and he will keep those experiences with him for the rest of his life. It was just such a traumatic thing that happened to him. Dave must have been such a strong guy to be able to overcome everything that happened to him because I know most people would not have had the guts to keep living the way he did. If you’re interested in books with such great detail and well organized writing and are such great books to read, these are two good books for you to read.

Such a Pretty Girl by Laura Wiess

I like this book because what happens in this book could happen in real life. I love to read true stories and this book has lots of emotional moments. I think other students should read this book because it is an interesting book filled with emotions.

Such a Pretty Girl Book Review

Laura Wiess' book, Such a Pretty Girl, is a book with a story that can actually happen in real life. If you like reading books that have different emotions like sadness, anger, revenge and pain in the soul, you would really want to read this book.

This book is about a girl named Meredith who is a teen who lives with abusive parents. On top of that, Meredith has a boyfriend who is handicapped and he really loves her. Meredith's mom in an alcoholic and her dad is a sex offender. She had been sexually abused by her dad but her mom still didn't do anything to help her. Her dad was promised ten years of prison time for crimes he committed but instead he gets out early. This meant her dad would be able to abuse her again.

Once, while her boyfriend was on a trip to get surgery so he could walk again, Meredith is alone in her house. She knows her dad is going to strike again and sexually abuse her. This time Meredith was prepared. She put cameras in her room so she could have evidence this time. When her dad tried to abuse her again, this time she would have proof which would send her dad back to jail for a long time. Also, her mom was then accused of letting a teen stay alone with a sex offender.

The light was shining in Meredith's life again. She had gotten rid of her two abusive parents and her boyfriend was going to be normal. Finally, she could be happy with the only person who never hurt her...her boyfriend. This book really got my attention in every chapter because it made me think of how this could really happen to any girl in real life which is something I do not want anyone to go through. If you want to find out the ending of this book, I recommend you read Such a Pretty Girl which is full of different emotions that would make you think of your own life which is what it did to me.

Please Help Me God by: Sister Mary Rose McGready

I think my book was really interesting and I liked it because in every chapter it talks about a different story of homeless kids who ask God for help. There is a covenant house where Sister Mary helps every kid who tells their story about how they thought life wasn’t worth it.

It’s also a nonfiction book and I like reading books that are true life stories. What I liked most about this book was the way the kids tell their own story and after all they've been through they thank God for helping them. It grabbed my attention.

I recommend this book for others to read because it’s a good book that made me realize how important the family is and to appreciate everything God gives us. In this book, none of the kids who talk about their life experiences have their parents, which is really sad to not have family next to you during difficult moments.

I recommend you read this book; it’s a short book and it's non fiction. You will like it.

Two Badges by Mona Ruiz

This book is a very good book if you like inspirational stories and want to see how much people struggle but make good things come out of it. This book is about a young girl who lives in Santa Ana, California and joins a gang called the F-Troopers. The story tells a lot about how she struggles as a young girl, dropping out of school, getting pregnant and marrying an abusive husband who hit her in front of her children. Her dream, as well as her dad’s, has always been to become a police officer of Santa Ana. As she grows up, she faces many decisions. Her biggest decision is whether to follow her dream and become a police officer or keep on gang banging and go against some of her family members and friends.

I really liked this book because it shows how a young girl struggles so much growing up and how many hard decisions she went through but made the best of the experiences she had. I recommend other students read this book because it shows no matter how bad things are in your life you can always get out and become anything in life you want.

The Interruption of Everything by Terry McMillan

Terry McMillan's book, “The Interruption of Everything”, is a very detailed but fun to read fiction book. It is an enjoyment to read. It tells how a woman by the name of Marilyn, who is in her mid-forties, thinks life is grand. Then her husband, Leon, comes out with a secret that might cause huge changes in her life. Leon's mother lives with them as well as the dog she has had for as long as she can remember. Leon’s father passed away many months ago. Her sister is a drug addict with two kids and her mother might have Alzheimer's disease. Marilyn has three kids, a daughter who is 21 and pregnant and twin boys who are 18 and in college. Marilyn has a lot of obstacles to overcome. Will she get over them?

A Child Called "It" by David Pelzer

“A Child Called It” is indeed a nonfiction book. There are a couple of books written by the author, Dave Pelzer, and if you have read any of them you know this is a very good and interesting book about his childhood life. The story starts off with a happy family. His mother is a stay at home wife and his father is a firefighter. Somewhere along the way, the mother becomes an alcoholic and mistreats Dave. The abuse is immense and it seems as if his other brothers don't get that abuse. Dave gets locked up in the basement and sent to the hospital a couple of times because of his mother. Dave's life turns into hell when his father notices this and won't put a stop to his alcoholic wife and her abuse toward Dave.

Diary by Chuck Palaniuk

In Diary, we are thrown into a story of love, hate and conspiracy but mostly hate. Misty Wilcot is a mediocre wife, with a mediocre job and a mediocre life. Her husband is comatose from a previous accident, an accident she indirectly caused, but an accident nonetheless. A chain of events unfolds to leave Misty miserable but at the same time almost content in her misery. I enjoyed the deranged storytelling as well as the social interactions that had a consistent edge of repressed malice.

THE GLASS CASTLE - Jeannette Walls

There are many reasons why I liked this book. The most important reason is the love and innocence of a smart young girl that keeps her believing in her parents even though they hadn't been good parents at all. Another reason I loved this book is because when I was reading it I could feel a huge emotion, like if I was part of it. I also realize kids who live with alcoholic people suffer more than what I thought. I also liked it because it gives you a perfect example that it is better to confront your errors right away instead of running away from them.

I believe other students would not just enjoy this book but would also identify with it. I think after reading this book, readers would have a better idea of what they want to do with their life.

A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer

There is much to respect about Dave Pelzer. He served his country during Desert Storm and has received commendations from Presidents Reagan, Bush the First and Clinton for his work as a motivational speaker. His other honors include being named California's Volunteer of the Year in 1990, one of 1993's Ten Outstanding Young Americans and one of the Outstanding Young Persons of the World for 1994. He is a best selling author and tells his story to the world in the book, A Child Called "It". He is the survivor of the third worst case of child abuse in California history.

Dave's powerful story begins on March 5, 1973 when Dave is 12 years old. He describes his morning before school when he has 20 minutes to wash the dishes and clean the kitchen if he has any hopes of eating that morning. Dave explains how his mother starves him as one of her many horrible "punishments". Dave has not eaten since lunch the day before. When Dave takes his hand out of the scalding dish water for a second, his mother catches him. As soon as his mother sees his hands out of the water she smashes his head into the kitchen counter. Dave falls and cries to stop his mother from hitting him again; he knows his mother gets satisfaction from his pain so he doesn't try to be tough.

His mother gives him a half eaten bowl of Lucky Charms and takes him, along with his brothers, to school. When Dave arrives at school he is late and his mother yells at him to tell the school nurse he ran into a door if she asks what happened to him. Since Dave is late to school he has to go see the school nurse which turns out to be a huge turning point in Dave's life because the nurse finally decides to help him. When the nurse sees the huge wound on Dave's head she asks what happened. Of course Dave told her just what his mom instructed him to say. The nurse again does not belief him because this is not the first time Dave has come to her office.

She pulls out the boy's record that includes bruises, cuts, malnutrition and, of course, the stab wound. The nurse tells the school principal and calls the police. Dave is taken to the San Mateo Juvenile Department Center never to return home. Dave, in his story, tells us his mother was not always abusive. He describes her as being warm and loving.

He tells us his mother would leave on trips and everything was nice. His mother changed when he was just four years old. He was never too sure why but he said it was because of her excessive drinking and his father’s absence due to his fireman duties. His mother focused all of her rage mostly on him because she disliked him more than her other kids.

The story continues through his life with his evil mother. He explains why he cannot escape and that his father will not do anything to help because he too is an alcoholic. Dave is a smart boy because he knows his mother's "games" and how to make things better for the moment.

One of the major passages in the book was when Dave was stabbed by his mother and all his dad said was “well, you better go wash those dishes". This happened when Dave was in the kitchen and he did not do his chores fast enough. His mother got mad and pointed the knife at him saying "I'm going to kill you" until she slipped and stabbed him. Dave started bleeding a lot and passed out. When Dave passed out his mother cleaned his wounds.

Later Dave goes to tell his dad what happened but his dad is drunk and does not care. This was a very important passage because it's when Dave finds out no one will help him, not even his father, whom he once loved so much. His own father did not help him and did not care. The author really does a very nice job of explaining everything with such great detail. Since this is a first person story it gives a lot more feeling to it.

Another important passage was when Dave's mother forces him to stay in the locked bathroom with a bucket of Clorox mixed with ammonia. I think this was one of the best sensory images from the author in the whole book because he described the scene so well I could even feel my eyes stinging. The author made me feel his pain so much during the whole story of the book.

This book is an autobiographical story. It's the true story of the author, Dave Pelzer. I think because the book is a true story and is written from the child’s perspective, the story provides a lot more detail and really puts you in his shoes. The book’s weakness is that it's written in a very simple writing style with not a lot of thought into the use of words because he is writing it as if he was a little boy. This book is short and easy for everyone to understand. It's a must read for anyone who wants to have an interesting read in a short amount of time.

A Child Called "It" by Dave Pelzer

This easy-to-read novel by David Pelzer is an amazing story about David's distorted childhood. It taught me a great deal of true life experiences that weren't at all similar to those of which I am generally aware. I think other students would like this book because it does not require much thinking while reading and teaches you about a man's life who is known throughout the country today for his unique childhood and amazing strength.

Cut by Patricia McCormick

Callie is an average teenager growing up in a healthy family until her little brother, Sam, gets deathly sick with asthma. She is forced to grow up quickly and soon she is practically taking care of herself. She is overwhelmed with life's milestones and begins the lethal habit of cutting herself to forget about her internal battles. Before long, Callie ends up in a treatment facility for girls with substance abuse issues and eating disorders but there is no one with a self inflicted abuse problem.

Being completely alone, she stops speaking all together, resists treatment and will not speak with anyone. However, after a series of events she decides to make the journey to treatment. Anyone can relate to this coming of age story when this young girl goes through hell and back to find out how strong she really is.
