News of a Kidnapping by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ book, “News of a Kidnapping”, is a really interesting book. This book is about Escobar’s way to pressure the government so they would not pass the laws that would extradite all the drug leaders from Colombia to the United States. In order to pressure the government, Escobar kidnaps several journalists and threatens to kill them one by one so the law won’t take effect.

The book switches from the journalist’s lives during this chaos to the government’s strategies to solve the problem. The lives of these young and old journalists are in the hands of the government. They will try to benefit the journalists yet they will also do anything to benefit themselves until Escobar gives up.

Because this book is set in Colombia, the reader must pay close attention when the writer talks about what the government is doing because it can get confusing. This book is excellent for people who like to see what people are capable of doing for power.
