Measure of a Man by Sidney Poitier

The book I chose for my independent reading is "The Measure of a Man". This is a spiritual autobiography by Sidney Poitier. He gives a personal narrative of his life from childhood in the Caribbean where he was poor compared to American standards. But that did not make a difference because he was always happy playing games outside, swimming and climbing all the trees he could. Poitier was sent to live with an older brother in Miami and it was difficult for him as a teen because he was a black man trying to get ahead in life. White people would treat him very poorly. Poitier left Miami for New York. There he found work as a dishwasher; he started to go to drama class and launched a celebrated acting career. Overall I liked this book. I would suggest this book if you like to read books that inspire you to do well in your life.
