Smack by Melvin Burgess

This book was very interesting and easily captivates readers. The problems that arise during the book are situations that teenagers can easily relate to. Smack has it all; love, drugs, sex, problems with the parents and of course, growing up. The story is written as a diary from numerous characters in the book which holds the reader’s interest. Every character has a different style of writing and a different perspective from the other characters which allows the reader to see things from different points of view. This book really lets you explore the characters minds and it gives you a taste of the street life. Every character is different. The two main characters are Gemma and Tar. Gemma is a girl who rebels against her parents and runs away from home. Tar is a young adolescent that also ran away because of the abuse he was encountering at home. The clever way that this book was written is truly creative. It’s unique in its own way. The ending ties in very well with the rest of this book.
