The Book of Dead Days by Marcus Sedgwick

A magician named Valerian searches graveyards, churches and underground waterways for a book he hopes will save him from a deal he has made with evil. Valerian must save his own life or pay the price for the pact. In this story, his loyal servant "Boy" (that's how he calls him because he doesn't have a proper name) is the key to the mystery but no one knows it is carried by him.
